AJC - Boater's body found in Chattahoochee

Saw this over on the NGTO board and thought it worthwhile to pass it along. At least one death and two others swept away but rescued during an "unexpected" water release from Buford Dam Sunday. Apparently, the recording at (770) 945-1466 had been saying on Friday and Saturday that no release was scheduled on Sunday, but changed it Sunday am.

There's a pretty heated debate on that board about responsibility, but ultimately we are responsible for ourselves. As a tail race fisherman myself, it was a grim reminder.

At the ARF Fall gathering this past October, about 12 of us hit the Tallapoosa river. The release was scheduled for 12:00pm.
The siren went off at 9:00am Shocked
Half of us were near the dam and able to get off river quickly.
The other half were out of earshot from the siren.
Luckily, they only turned on 2 turbines and we all got off safely, albeit with a few swamped boats.
Still a scary situation.

My nephew was one of those swamped boats. That was a very scary trip. One of the few times I was really scared on the water. The moral is dont trust those phone release messages.

....the phone messages are "projected" schedules that are made
a day or two in advance. If "unforseen" events happen on the system
at any-time; a sudden release can occur. I would only use the "schedule" for planning when the fishing conditions will be best...not for Safety...
Always be Alert.

Amen on that pfd pirate. If you dont know the water its better to be safe than sorry. Ps always wear your pfd in the winter, I went over in november and the water took my breath for 30 seconds or more. We also had a guy go over saturday and it took him several minutes to catch his breath. The cold water will take your breath away and it would be real easy to drown should the water be over your head.
