Trip Report---10 FEB 13

Postby shoalieman » Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:47 am

Probably will upload pic tonight, but for now.....
Decided to hit the river yesterday afternoon before the heavy rains hit, jacked up, and blew out all mid GA flows for who knows how long. I began by throwing a gaudy-colored standard-sized HF. The water was stained quite a bit; so why not go gaudy?
About my 3rd or 4th cast, I must've thrown to the right spot because I saw my line moving 2 for 3 seconds after the fly made splashdown. I set the hook hoping it wasn't some of those "moving weeds" that you swear are a fish. This particular hole has a lot of these weed clumps.
Wow.....no weeds. It was a fish and felt like something better than the ole cookie cutter 14 incher---nice.
Darn.....nice fight. The bass was big enough to burn my stripping finger---this hasn't happened in awhile.
Once it was in shallow water, it looked like a really long one, probably a full 18 inches worth.
The fish and I enjoyed a good long fight. Okay, I enjoyed a good long fight. I eventually coaxed the SB into 2 inch deep water and he agreed to taking his photo and weight. Okay, he reluctantly gave up his weight (3 lbs.) and did not smile or say cheese for nary a pic.
Three pounders are a ton of fun on the long rod. That fish made the whole trip special.
The wind waxed worse and worse and the weatherman had lied---it never hit 68 degrees. I cut the outing short which produced ample time to drop by the Subway for a $5 footlong on the way home. It was fun thinking about that winter fish with each bite of the sandwich. It was a tuna sub, so maybe this caused me to think about fish?
The bottom line is:
3 pound shoalies are awesome on the fly rod.

While were at it, here's 2 more HF-caught SB from the same hole caught back in January:

We have the same tastes in fishing and sandwiches. Thanks for reporting in.

Nice report, never tried a tuna sub, but I like tuna so why not? Looking forward to the picture.

Thanks for posting.

Can't wait to get on the water and get 1.) My first shoalie ever and 2.) My first shoalie (or anything other than small bluegill) on the fly!

Airplane Guy---once you do battle with a SB at 2.5 lbs or heavier on the fly---you will have to come back for more and more and more..................

Great catch and post SM! I was all set to head to the Flint and along came the monsoon season. The Carsonville gauge is at 13.13 and 11,400 cfs right now. Think I might wait a little while.

Yep, if I was now standing at the spot where I took those pics this past SUN afternoon---I'd be a drowned rat right now.

The Carsonville gauge is at 18.19 and 20,200 cfs this morning. You could put in at Pobiddy and get to Blackshear by kayak quicker than you can drive!

There's always a nutcase or two who will try to do YJ shoals when it's a Class IV.............

I swam down it one day chasing my yak when the lead broke on it. I didn't even know it was Yellow Jacket at the time, thought it was just another shelf in the river. Shoalieseeker helped me gather up my stuff.
