I ate my first Spot today. I am going to enjoy thinning them out of the Ocmulgee!! Very good eating fish.

I started to keep a few spots on our trip this past weekend
but I didnt want to put them in my cooler with my drinks
and didnt want to drag them around all day on a stringer.

Any ideas on keeping fish fresh on a all day float ?

Put them in with your drinks then wash your drinks in the river when you get get ready to consume them. Thay are not contaminated its just the smell on the outside.

I guess your right there BWB...They say fish oil is good for
your heart anyway :lol: Just have to be careful not to
kiss the wife when I get home huh :lol:

If it meant not kissing my wife I would forgo the drink. I have to have my sugar when I get home, but come to think of it that never happens till I have had had a bath. She usually says Ugh Gross, go take a shower. After that she's fair game. It sworth going fishing just to get that sugar when I get home.

I was just thinking about asking the same thing. So far I have been keeping them on a stringer but when I get ready to head home I throw them in my soft side cooler. I'm in a kayak, so the drag is annoying when I need to start paddling a distance.

Catch and keep

When I catch to keep - generally catfish or pickerel, but perhaps now, spots - I'll take a large softside tote cooler (Wal-Mart - about 8 bucks, I think). It's the size of a woman's beach tote with a zipper top. Put a bag of ice in it and stick it in the front hatch. It will hold a fair amount of fish and even large fish. I put a 27" redfish in there when we were at the beach. And they keep the ice from melting even in 90+ degree heat for most of the day.

How To Keep Your Beverages Clear and Stank Free:
Down here in the Jax area, we do not use stringers very often.....two reasons:
1-alligators
2-sharks

Next time you are in a bank or public building or even Publix, look for their stand by the door that gives you free umbrella baggies so your wet umbrella will not drip on the floor.

They are FREE and the longer ones for Golf Umbrellas are PERFECT to put fish in before you put them in your coolers!! They hold legal trout and reds and flounder very easily....drop the fish into the bag, squeeze out the air, and tie a knot in the end...Presto!!
Gotta keep the trout stank off the adult beverages!!! LOL!!

I always thought a whiff of fish slime on a pepsi can was just a part of being on the river. BW, I haven't had much luck with soft side coolers on the river, I had one that got dunked in the Flint a couple of years ago and that thing smelled so foul a couple of days later I chunked it. Jax's idea on the bag sounds like a good one, the ubiquitous walmart bag would work for the fish that most of us catch. If it will be awhile before you can cook or refrigerate them clean them and wash them in the river. The guts and the gills rot first. Sprinkling some rock salt will work for a day or two also, the brine keeps bacteria from multiplying.
